Are governments ever justified in censoring art? Why or why not?

Although social justice art is not a topic exclusive to the 20th and 21st centuries, the distribution of information regarding controversial art with gender, race, sexual, and/or environmental themes has increased with the proliferation of media. Choose an example of a social justice work of art from the 20th or 21st centuries from any discipline of the humanities (music, literature, sculpture, film, television, etc.). Then, address the following:
Identify the work and the medium.
Based on your example, to what extent does this work of art make a social contribution?
What aesthetic value does the work have? How does it reflect the human condition? How does it relate to your life?
Has this work ever been censored? If so, explain the circumstances.
Are governments ever justified in censoring art? Why or why not?
Examine some of the influences of this work of art. What was the public reaction to this work? Does it effectively portray its message?
Argue whether or not this work should be considered art. Explain why using terms learned in this course.
Include an accompanying statement from the artist(s) and a statement from a critic to support your points.
Choose whichever work of art you see fits best

What Is Postmodernism?

Just What Is Postmodernism?
Contemporary artists (such as Elizabeth Murray) and architects (Robert Venturi or Frank Gehry) have begun to explore the notion of a new set of principles, based upon the eclectic sum of our modern, complex, visual world of neon signs and fast sound bites. This sense of disjunction, that the parts can never form a unified whole, is what we have come to identify as Postmodernism. In his book, Learning from Las Vegas, Robert Venturi asserts that the collision of signs, styles, and symbols that mark the “American Strip,” in particular Las Vegas, could be seen as a new form of unity. “Disorder,” Venturi writes “[is] an order we cannot see….” Define Postmodernism and provide examples of where they have seen this union of eclectic designs.

How did you feel when creating your work of art?

Chapter 3 was all about what makes up an actual piece of art, from paint to wood. For this assignment, I want you to make a piece of art from unconventional materials. This can be coffee used as water color, coffee grinds, trash, office supplies-literally anything! Your subject matter can be anything as well. A landscape, still life or self portrait, for example. Compositions do not have to be overly complicated or detailed.
Take a look at this Buzzfeed article https://www.buzzfeed.com/stoli/10-amazing-examples-of-art-made-with-unconventional-material for inspiration! Here is another article to give you some ideas too. https://www.hongkiat.com/blog/unconventional-art/
The actual product you will turn in will consist of three pictures:
1) the raw materials
2) one photo of your process (a during photo)
3) the final product.
Answer the following questions in a brief written portion:
-What materials did you choose and why?
-What is your composition of? Why did you choose this subject matter?
-How did you feel when creating your work of art? Did you encounter any challenges you weren’t expecting? Was it easier than you thought?
You may choose to turn this in as either a word document or a presentation. I don’t care which one, as long as I can get it to work on my computer.
Google has free products that will serve for both of these types of situations-log into your Gmail account and hit the Google apps button in the upper right-hand side. (it looks like a bunch of dots) Then select Google Drive-then hit ‘new’ then choose a Google doc or Google slides.
