Examine the importance of agencies and a human service workers employing a systems thinking perspective in order to effectively meet the needs of consumers.

This Discussion is also about the Focal Agency
M1 Discussion A – Systems Thinking and Linking to the External Environment

In our first discussion, we will examine the importance of agencies and a human service workers employing a systems thinking perspective in order to effectively meet the needs of consumers. Included in a systems thinking approach is the issue of establishing links to the external environment which may be considered part of a systems thinking perspective. Having examined these important concepts and issues from the Halley text and the media resources section of this module, we will now discuss what these concepts mean and how they might be viewed or not viewed in our focal agencies. Review the readings from this module and assess the following:
Do the advantages of systems thinking when delivering human services outweigh the limitations? Why or why not?
If you use an open systems thinking approach with consumers, what linkages to the external environment would you explore? Please provide specific examples.

What is the formal mission statement of your agency and what services are provided?

YOUR FOCAL AGENCY’S MISSION STATEMENTS
Every human service agency has a Mission Statement that describes what the agency is supposed to accomplish and provides services that are intended to meet the needs of consumers in their communities. For this exercise, you will need to use information gathered from your Focal Agency interview. This exercise is intended to help you understand how agency mission statements relate to practice and provide practical information about a variety of agencies and services, as well as how a mission statement relates to the services the agency provides. You DO NOT need to respond to your classmates, however, all students must be sure to read what others have posted.
To complete this exercise you must first complete the module readings, then address the following:
What is the formal mission statement of your agency and what services are provided? Be specific and list all services offered.
Does the formal mission statement accurately represent the role the agency plays in your community? Is the mission statement an accurate and/or complete statement of the agency’s purpose?
Does the agency have any latent or unintended functions in the community? (The term “latent function” comes from sociology and means “unintended” or some times “largely unacknowledged”. For instance, an agency providing sheltered workshop services has a major mission of providing a livelihood for the disabled, but their latent mission may be to provide inexpensive labor for local industries.)
Does the agency have any dysfunctional aspects in the community as a whole? (The term “dysfunction” also comes from sociology and means either an “unintended negative consequence” or “a breakdown in a social system.” For example, in the illustration above, union members might see the sheltered workshop as a threat to full pay jobs and would consider this a dysfunction.)
NOTE FROM THE CLIENt:
I WOULD LIKE TO CHOOSE MASSACHUSETTS MENTOR FOR MY FOCAL AGENCY.
Thank you

Which standard do you think you still need to further develop?

M1 Discussion – Why Cultural Competence is Important

A theme that reverberates throughout the few initial chapters is the importance of self-awareness. My hope is that you begin to understand the material in deeper and more personal ways. Watch the following videos and answer the questions below:
Cultural Diversity: The Sum of Our Parts by Hilda Mwangi (2017 video, 15 minutes in length, captioned) on You Tube
Discussion Questions (2-3 paragraphs):
Consider how diversity enriches your life and expands your world view and experiences.
What makes you up and how do you want to share who you are with the class this semester and throughout your career in human services? Please do not divulge anything about yourself that will leave you feeling vulnerable. Instead, please follow the same format as Hilda did at the end of her Ted talk.
Discuss the ways this standard might be helpful in a real-world setting (create a vignette).
Reflecting on your own cultural identity and influences, discuss what benefits are gained when providers are culturally competent. Which standard do you think you still need to further develop?
Remember, if you have a current event that is relevant to an issue on diversity that you want to share with the class, post it in the What’s Happening in the News discussion area which is an ungraded, casual space for us to keep current and chat about what is literally happening today!
Discussion Participation Tips
Your initial post should be a reflective response that answers all questions, is adequately detailed, and cites outside sources when necessary to support your post. Typically, a post should be at least 250 words to allows you to answer and ask follow up questions, provide supplemental information, and to share views and experiences that draw us into an in-depth and meaningful conversation. Your first response should be posted by midweek and then you should return to respond to at least two other students during the remaining week(s) of the module. Be sure to use APA format to cite sources when putting forth the ideas, opinions, and facts of others.
NOTE FROM THE CLIENT
I uploaded the content Guides for the Discussion down below.

Describe how one might change their communication strategies in a similar situation.

ANALYZE A COUNSELING SCENARIO
Introduction
In this assignment, you will use the scenario below involving a counseling client, therapist, and case manager. You are in the role of the administrator of the counseling practice. Use what you have learned so far about empathic communication, active listening, understanding differing perceptions, personal identity, and cultural identity to analyze the interactions and your own reactions. Create recommendations to help improve communication between all participants
Scenario
You are the administrator of a counseling practice. Branden, an African American male, is a client who was recently diagnosed as having Bipolar I. Branden came to the counseling practice today because he was experiencing a manic episode and needed support. His agitation increased when, upon arriving to the counseling practice, he learned that his regular therapist had to leave suddenly due to a personal emergency. For this visit, Branden was assigned to a male Caucasian therapist, Steve, who Branden perceived as being very opinionated and having a passive-aggressive approach. During the session, as Branden explained his challenges, he felt that Steve was dismissive and appeared to be uninterested in what Branden had to say. He thought that Steve focused more on his personal opinion of Branden rather than listening to Branden’s perspective. Immediately following the session, Branden talked to the case manager, Jill, who is also African American. Branden said that, as an African American man, he didn’t feel like Steve was sensitive to his needs. Branden said, “My session was horrible! It seemed to me that Steve wanted to only hear himself and was not very interested in my actual challenges!”
Jill thanked Branden for reporting his experience, apologized, and assured him this would not happen again. Jill, who communicates with a very direct approach, addressed Branden’s concerns with Steve. Steve felt attacked and became defensive. You overhear Steve say, “I was only trying to tell Branden that he should stop focusing on stuff that doesn’t matter and get on with life!” Jill, the case manager, quickly retorted with “You see, that is a major problem! It’s not about you; it’s about Branden and what he is experiencing from his perspective only!” Before this continued to escalate, you shut down the communication between them and ask them to please meet you in the conference room to resolve this matter. In your opinion, the main goal should always be to meet the needs of the client which ultimately did not happen in this case.
Instructions
To complete this assignment, write a 2–3 page paper addressing the following:
Analyze aspects of the communication in the scenario that were influenced by the personal identities of the people involved.
Consider individual, group, and cultural identities.
Explain how you think these identities were displayed in their communication.
Analyze your perspective on this situation based on your personal identity.
How did you react as the administrator?
How would you have reacted if you had been the therapist or the case manager?
As you respond to these questions, consider your attachment style and self-concept and how they influence your reactions.
Reflect on how the identity of your culture or society may have influenced your self-concept and communication style.
Recommend strategies the case manager and the therapist could use to improve communication.
Align your recommendations with what you perceive as each of their personal identities and preferred communication styles.
How could they make their communication more empathic?
How could they employ active listening?
How could they work more successfully with people who have different perceptions?
How could they better understand other’s personal, group, and cultural identities?
Support your recommendations using your textbook and other scholarly literature.
Describe how you might change your communication strategies if you were in a similar situation.
Consider the strategies for yourself in each of the roles: administrator, case manager, and therapist.
Incorporate what you have learned about identity, culture, and communication styles.
If you do not think you’d change your communication strategies, explain why or why not.
