1. D.B. 2 Instructions Topic: Ethical Concerns & the Stanford Prison Experiment All students are to post the main post (30 pts), which answers the questions of the forum, and then post a response (20 pts) to the main post of one of your classmates (total 50 pts). Instructions: Read Ch. 3 Ethics, review the PPT ‘D.B. 2 Stanford Prison Experiment’, and then watch the following video about the experiment http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=760lwYmpXbc (30 min.). Overview: Young men who were recruited volunteers were Stanford students between the ages of 18- 21. They were from upper class or elite families and had never gotten in trouble. One of the focuses of this study was to take young men who were from similar backgrounds (homogeneous sample) and randomly assign them to 1 of 2 roles. Behaviors then could be attributed to the social environment as all of the young men had similar attributes and backgrounds. Although Dr. Zimbardo received IRB approval for his experiment with human subjects, he has been strongly criticized for his unethical treatment of the research participants during his study. Today, such a study would not be approved. It is widely recognized that maintaining the well-being of research participants is more important than any scientific knowledge generated from such a study. Researchers are expected to think creatively about ways to answer their research question following ethical guidelines and protocols. Include in your post: 1. Describe the ways in which research participants were treated unethically during this study (include concepts from Ch. 3, specific incidents that were problematic, and consider if staff are normally allowed to behave however they want)? 2. This documentary reveals important information about how people respond to power and inequality. How did research participants behave if they were in the ‘guard group’ as opposed to the ‘inmate group’? 3. This was an artificial hierarchical social arrangement, yet how did the social construction of this experiment constrict and limit human behavior? 4. In what ways may these types of artificial hierarchies reflect real-world social dynamics (think beyond just a prison environment and provide examples)? 5. What do you think are some possible ways at Dr. Zimbardo could have answered his research question while maintaining ethical standards and not harming the research participants? *Grading & Posting length:  Main discussion board posts should answer each of the questions in paragraph format for full points (paragraphs are a minimum of 3 sentences long and are typically longer than that).  One or two sentences are not enough to answer any forum question! When in doubt write more!  Put your answers in complete sentences. No bullet points. 3. D.B. 3 Instructions Topic: 1 Academic Source All students are to post the main post (30 pts), which answers the questions of the forum, and then post a response (20 pts) to the main post of one of your classmates (total 50 pts). Overview: Select 1 of your sources that you plan to use for your research paper and answer the following questions. Ideally this exercise will help you organize your ideas and aid in writing your research paper. Make sure to incorporate information from the PPT on ‘Library Resources and Research Paper’ posted on Canvas under ‘Modules’ in the section called ‘Research Paper Information’ in your answer. Please try to write at least a paragraph for each question and make sure you are being specific so that you can use this information to help you create your research paper. Include in your post: 1. Write out the correct way to reference this source in the Bibliography section of your paper: 2. What was the main objective of the data source (what information were the author(s) trying to learn about or convey, why is that topic important to study, what was their research question)? 3. Describe how the researchers collected their data (what was their sample size, who were their research participants, what research method did they use, etc.). Make sure that you make a distinction between their literature review (review of what other researchers have found on that topic) and the new research generated by the author(s). 4. What were the researcher’s findings and interpretations of their findings? Did they learn anything new or interesting? Were there any results they didn’t know how to interpret? What other types of research did they think was important to provide more answers to this topic? 5. What information / facts / figures will you be including in your research paper? Pick one of the chapters in the textbook and apply those concepts to the findings of the research article (you can also include information from the supplementary PPTs posted on Canvas). Grading & Posting length:  Main discussion board posts should answer each of the questions in paragraph format for full points (paragraphs are a minimum of 3 sentences long and are typically longer than that).  One or two sentences are not enough to answer any forum question! When in doubt write more!  Put your answers in complete sentences. No bullet points. 4. D.B. 5 Instructions Topic: Research Paper Methodology Proposal All students are to post the main post (30 pts), which answers the questions of the forum, and then post a response (20 pts) to the main post of one of your classmates (total 50 pts). Include in your post: 1. What is your research paper topic? Why your topic is important to study (include your own personal interest in learning more)? What is your research question (in general, what about your topic do you want found out about)? 2. What is the purpose of your proposed study (exploration, description, explanation)? Do you plan on proposing a qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods type of study? Do you think a cross- sectional or longitudinal study would be best suited to answering your research question? Describe the pros and cons of the different types of studies for the purpose of gathering information on your specific research question. 3. What type of sample would you want to have / be able to have (review Ch. 7)? What method would you use to collect your sample? (Your answer to this question would also inform your answers to the questions in section 2 above.) 4. What specific research method(s) would you like to propose to answer your research question (remember this is just a proposal, you won’t be implementing your ideas, you just need to propose a method of data collection that is logical for collecting the type of data you would need to have to answer your research question)? Describe the pros and cons (including ethical issues) of the different types of methods (experiment, survey, field research, unobtrusive, evaluation) for the purpose of gathering information on your specific research question. 5. D.B. 6 Instructions Topic: Observation – Practice in Field Research (Ch. 10) All students are to post the main post (30 pts), which answers the questions of the forum, and then post a response (20 pts) to the main post of one of your classmates (total 50 pts). Instructions: Completing this assignment will entail engaging in observation for at least one hour (either participant or non-participant). Identify a space that is convenient, ethically feasible and physically safe for you (and won’t get you into trouble with anyone!). For example, it would be fine to observe a public place on EMU campus. Do not write a paper on a recollection of past events or observations made while you are supposed to be doing something else. Review the Ch. 10 PPT on Field Research. Include in your post: 1. Where you decided to observe, why you decided to observe in that location, and what behaviors you plan to observe. Also list what questions will you plan to ask yourself during your observation. 2. Include what field notes you took during your observation. What do you feel you could infer about the behaviors that you are observing? Additionally, use your data (your observations) to support your statements (be accurate, do not overstate findings from a 1-hour observation). For example, “I think ______ , because I am observing _________.” If you choose to not make your field notes during your observation, you should make your notes as soon after observing as possible. 3. How did you personally experience the observation? Was your experience comfortable or uncomfortable? How did you feel about observing and taking notes on the behavior of others? 4. List your research question for your research paper. How might you design an observation / field research study to help answer your research question? What ethical issues would you need to consider? *Grading & Posting length:  Main discussion board posts should answer each of the questions in paragraph format for full points (paragraphs are a minimum of 3 sentences long and are typically longer than that).  One or two sentences are not enough to answer any forum question! When in doubt write more!  Put your answers in complete sentences. No bullet points.

1. What are some race, class, and/or gender concerns addressed by anomie and social disorganization theories? What race, class, and gender concerns go unaddressed in these theories? 2. Labeling theorists’ fundamental concern is with secondary deviance rather than primary deviance. What are the strengths and weaknesses of this approach? What other theory do you think would work well with labeling theory to explain primary deviance? Why? 3. In what ways do the labeling, conflict, and feminist theories address power disparities? Which approach do you find the most compelling?

In our discussions of gender and sex we distinguished between the two and talked about the dominant and most socially valued versions of masculinity and femininity. in a 2 page essay, fully discuss, using examples where possible and necessary.
You are expected to demonstrate an ability to think critically and analytically about the issues discussed during this course. While you are encouraged to express your own views and reflect upon your own life experiences, it is important to remember that there is a difference between sociological analysis (based on evidence and logical reasoning) and purely personal experience/opinion (based on uncritical acceptance of commonsense). Your opinion and reflections MUST be informed by theoretical concepts and MUST provide reference to the literature on the issues and in support of your essay (PPLEASE ask for clarification on this if you are confused or unsure).
The main evaluation criteria for your essays are:
• Critical Thinking

Why do the elements of the film you selected count as deviance?

Write a short 2-page paper discussing one of the films. You will watch the film on your own time and use course concepts and theories to analyze & explain the film. Include a very brief synopsis of the film (less than a paragraph). The bulk of the paper will be devoted to discussing the ideas, concepts, and theories we’ve covered in class.
Papers must cite (but not quote at great length) at least one passage from a relevant reading that supports your response(s) to the film. This can be a reading from class or an outside source, but cite it properly. This will help you get into the practice of citing your sources that will be required for the final paper.
Remember that you will need to define each concept, term, idea or theory that you use and link it explicitly to the film you viewed.
NOTE: If you have already seen one of these films it is OK to use it for this paper, but you might get more out of this assignment if you watch a film you haven’t seen before.

The issues to address in your paper are:
8-10 aspects of deviance portrayed in the movie. Why do the elements of the film you selected count as deviance?
In your opinion, what were the most serious deviant acts depicted in the film? What were the least serious deviant acts? Why?
Which, if any, of the deviant acts were crimes?
Who was the most deviant character in the film? The least deviant? Why?
How are the deviant acts reacted to or addressed in the film? Do you think the characters demonstrated an appropriate reaction to the deviant acts? How might you have acted differently? Why? What are some non-deviant approaches that characters could have used in the film?
Which theory of deviance is most evident in this film? Explain. That is, what is the cause of these deviant behaviors?
While writing your paper, you must include and correctly use all 5 of the following concepts. Be sure to put the terms in bold so that I can easily identify them. It is not enough to just define the concepts in the paper. You need to demonstrate an understanding of the concepts by applying them to situations in the film.
Deviance
Crime
Social control
Norm

Post your 2-page reaction paper here.

How do people negotiate in social interactions?

Please do an observation of people outdoors related to mask wearing. Specifically, spend twenty minutes outdoors or indoors looking out and observe who is wearing a facemask for Corona and who is not. Try to note the age, sex, race, religion, economic status, and other social characteristics of the people. Also look for how people interact with each other related to mask wearing. For example, do people with masks tend to avoid others who are not wearing masks? How do people negotiate these social interactions? Are they friendly about it or are they rude or hostile? Tell us what time of day or night you did your observation, what neighborhood did you do it in, and where were you sitting or standing when you did it. Just describe what you saw in A LOT of detail. After you have finished your observation, consider what norms you observed outdoors. Do you suspect these are norms that are context specific (only during Corona) or relate to broader social patterns that exist beyond Corona? Explain.
