Describe an hypothetical organism that will be able to thrive in an extremely hot desert environment.

–Describe an hypothetical organism that will be able to thrive in an extremely hot desert environment. Describe its evolution, rather than talk about how you created it.
–Don’t make the paper “conditional”, as in the organism “could” or “might” have certain features. Instead, write the paper as if your organism already exists (perhaps recently discovered?) and you are describing the biology of existing specimens.
–Give this organism specific combinations of biochemistry, anatomy, physiology, behavior, reproduction, diet, predators, prey, etc. that will make it successful in its extreme environment. Consider putting this information in a Table as well as describing in the text.
–There is a ‘catch’, however. You can’t “invent” new processes or structures. For example, you can’t create a silicon- rather than carbon-based metabolism, nor can you create rocket engines instead of wings. But you can borrow from any extant organism to create your new one – that is, giving camels or fish wings (wait – some fish already HAVE “wings”!).
–Be sure to give your organism a (clever) genus and species name.
The points in your paper should be supported with references in the body of the text and provided in a “References” section. No more than 50% of the references should be from web sites, with at least half coming from the primary literature (i.e. journal articles and reviews).
–Submit assignment as a Word document, double-spaced with numbered pages.
–Use this naming format for your file: “(Last Name) Writing Assignment #3”.
–Create a title page with your name and a working link to the PDF of the journal article you are using.
–You can use images drawn from the paper or elsewhere to support your points. Note, however, that images cannot be used to replace text (see “Length?”, below)
–Length? Minimum of 1100 words, excluding your list of cited references. Maximum of 1750 words. Note: It is generally harder to write a short piece such as this, than a long one, because every word must count towards getting your message across in a short piece.
–References should be in a standard, consistent format. The name of the author(s) must ALWAYS be followed by the date published. Every cited reference must be in a concluding References section, and no references should be in that final section unless they are cited in the main text.
